The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was set to release last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
